Spanish Civil War: 1938 (2 May). Postcard titled ‘Mallorca – Puerto de Antraitx’ sent from HMS Royal Oak where she was in Palma franked with 1 1/2d. KGVI tied by RECEIVED FROM / H.M. SHIP 8 May arrival cancellation. Part message reads “Yesterday we witnessed an air raid … A 2 pounder shell hit ‘A’ turret but didn’t explode”. The British role in the Spanish Civil War was a minor one, in which unites of the Royal Navy participated in the international blockade of Spain designed to prevent the seaborne inflow of weapons.
