1897 Liberia to French Consul from France returned

Code: E316

Liberia: 1897 incoming envelope from Verneuille sur Avre, France addressed to the French Consul in Monrovia, endorsed “United States of Liberia/ Via Liverpool”, franked 25c. tied cds, reverse with London cds (AU 23) and two segmented circular ‘L’ date stamps, Monrovia arrival cancel of 15 SE. It would appear that the Consul found that the letter had to be handled by the Foreign Ministry in Paris, and wrote this return address across the front of envelope in lilac. The cover was sent to Grand Bassam, Ivory Coast to catch the Loango to Marseille steamer with Paq R. No.5 cds of 5 Novon front top left. One small tone below stamp not unduly detracting, a journey of about 140,000 km ending up 100km from where originally posted.
