Cyprus: 1981 postcard to East Germany franked with Turkish Cyprus stamp tied by Gazi Magusa (Famagusta) datestamp. Considered as illegal use and blacked out by the receiving country with two line Illegale / Wertzeichen (illegal stamps) hand cachet.
Usage of Turkish Cyprus stamps not recognised by the UPU declared mail should be ‘return to the sender’. However some countries ignored this ruling and refused to accept mail for delivery and either ‘blacked out’ the stamps of applied a cachet and returned the mail.
